Healthcare Jobs Continue Growth in First Quarter of 2017

healthcare hiring report april 2017

Healthcare employment continued its healthy growth in the first quarter of 2017 and in the month of March. This growth happened despite the extended debate over the Affordable Care Act in Congress, which occurred during those months.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported that healthcare employment increased by 14,000 jobs in March, with hospitals gaining 9,000 jobs and outpatient care centers 6,000. In the first three months of the year, healthcare has added an average of 20,000 jobs per month. The average monthly increase so far this year is less than 2016, when jobs grew at an average of 32,000 per month, the BLS said.

However, there is a glut of unfilled job openings in the healthcare industry. According to the BLS, there were more than 1 million job openings at the end of December 2016 but only half that number of job hires.
