he organization started as the Japanese Benevolent Society in 1892 and was incorporated in 1899.[1] The first Japanese Charity Hospital opened in 1900 and expanded in 1902. A larger facility was built in 1917 at the present site with donations from Emperor Taisho of Japan. In 1934 Emperor Hirohito of Japan donated funds for more expansion. After the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, the US military occupied the hospital during World War II and renamed it Kuakini Medical Center, after the street.[2] The street was in turn named for John Adams Kuakini (1791–1844) who was acting Governor of Oahu in the 1830s.[3] In 1945 the hospital returned to civil control. The hospital went from caring and supporting the Japanese immigrants to assisting and offering health care services to the whole community. Switching from caring for just Japanese immigrants to the entire community, meant that the hospital needed better facilities to provide adequate patient care. The hospitals Ewa wing and Waikiki wing had their construction financed by a major fundraising drive in 1951; Increasing the bed count of Kuakini to 140 beds.

Additionally, Flagstaff has a strong sense of community, which can be comforting for RNs looking to connect with others outside of work.

Another noteworthy city is Santa Cruz, California, which offers a laid-back beach lifestyle akin to Wailuku. The pay for RN positions, especially in specialty areas like progressive care, can reach similar heights as those in Hawaii, though the cost of living is notably high. Santa Cruz attracts those who appreciate nearby ocean access and redwood forests, presenting numerous opportunities for outdoor activities. With a focus on wellness and holistic community initiatives, the work environment for healthcare professionals often aligns with a progressive ethos that encourages work-life balance and personal growth.

Lastly, Olympia, Washington, is another city that aligns with Wailuku’s lifestyle, especially regarding climate and work environment. As the state capital, Olympia provides solid employment opportunities for RNs in progressive care settings, with salaries that can be competitive with those in Hawaii. The cost of living is reasonable compared to many West Coast cities, making it easier to allocate funds for housing and leisure. Known for its commitment to environmental cause and community engagement, Olympia offers an array of activities, ranging from local markets to theaters, fostering a dynamic and engaging lifestyle that can be appealing to healthcare professionals seeking both work satisfaction and personal fulfillment.
