This department provides comprehensive coordinated care for ambulatory patients with complex diseases or disorders. This department uses a team approach providing patients access to multiple physicians and care givers at one visit as opposed to having the patient go to multiple visits or locations to receive their treatment. Services are provided in a hospital-based outpatient department or outpatient center located within 35 miles of the hospital campus. Job Summary: Delivers coordinated nursing care for a patient or an assigned group of patients in an oncology department according to established standards of care and the nursing process. Supervises and directs the activities of various levels of assigned nursing staff, and coordinates care with other disciplines while utilizing critical thinking, professional and supervisory discretion, and independent judgment. Job Requirements: Education and Work Experience: Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN): Preferred Oncology nurse experience in a radiation department: Preferred Licenses/Certifications: Registered Nurse (RN) licensure in the state of practice: Required Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) or Basic Life Support (BLS OR HS-BLS OR RQIBLS) certification: Required Facility Specific License/Certifications: Oncology Nursing Certification (ONC) or Chemotherapy Immunotherapy (CHIM) or ONC/ONCC-CHIM: Required Essential Functions: Conducts baseline assessment and nursing history of outpatients receiving radiation therapy including vital signs, pain assessment and medication history. Utilizes Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) guidelines in documentation. Assesses patients for fall risk, allergies and communicates to physicians and team. Conducts weekly assessment of patients for signs and symptoms of side effects from radiation therapy. Prepares charts for initial assessments and follow up visits to radiation therapy department. Communicates pertinent changes to physician. Assists physicians with all procedures performed in radiation therapy department including Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS), High Dose Rate (HDR) Brachytherapy, and examinations. Prepares exam room for patient. Takes vital signs and assists physician with procedures. Cleans and maintains instruments used in procedures. Performs blood draws in department; starts intravenous therapy for the administration of intravenous contrast; administers medication in department as ordered by physician. Administers oxygen when necessary. Acts as a mediator and resource in the department in regards to transportation, scheduling and pertinent medical issues between the patients and the radiation therapists. Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

This position provides specialist nursing advice and support to patients, their families and other healthcare professionals following diagnosis and through all stages of treatment. The incumbent is responsible for providing medical oncology and other infusion treatments and education regarding these treatments to patients with cancer, ensuring continuity of evidence-based nursing care for patients undergoing chemotherapy, assessing health, health related and nursing needs of patients, their families, and other caregivers by identifying and initiating appropriate steps for effective care.

Performs independent nursing functions and delegated medical functions in accordance with accepted practice standards as defined by the state Board of Nursing. Assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates nursing care. 1. Evaluates health status through the ongoing collection and assessment of health data. 2. Performs health teaching and health counseling. 3. Provides therapy and treatment that is supportive and restorative to life and well-being either directly to the patient or indirectly through consultation with, delegation to, supervision of, or teaching of others. 4. Executes delegated medical functions. 5. Refers patients as needed for further evaluation or treatment. 6. Reviews and monitors therapy and treatment plans. 7. Documents in accordance with hospital and regulatory guidelines. 8. Uses resources as needed. 9. Promotes mission, vision, and values of SCL Health, and abides by service behavior standards. 10. Performs other duties as assigned. 11. May be required to float to other departments (within scope of competency and qualifications) based on business need. 12.
