Unit Name: D5 Neurosciences Patient Population: D5 is a 43 bed neurosciences unit with three levels of care. We take patients with ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes, brain tumors, aneurysms, seizures, traumatic brain injuries, neuromuscular diseases and other diagnosis’ involving the neurologic system. There are 22 neuro floor beds with patients requiring every 4-hour monitoring. There are also 21 neuro progressive care beds with patients requiring monitoring from every 15 minutes to every 2 hours. Additionally, there are 7 Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) beds embedded in the 22 neuro floor beds. These patients are seizure disorder patients admitted electively with their anti-convulsant medications on hold and hard wired to continuous EEG. This allows the physicians to identify the area of the brain where the seizures are occurring. Many of these patients become candidates for brain mapping with surgically placed grids to further pinpoint the area causing the seizures. This mapping allows the surgeon to determine if the patient would be a candidate for surgical removal of parts of the brain to stop seizure activity and still allow the patient to have functionality. Patients in the neuro progressive areas are those with fresh strokes, subarachnoid hemorrhages, TPA administration – either initiated or maintained on the unit, craniotomies, ventriculostomies, lumbar drains, SEPS drains, anti-hypertensive medication drips such as Cleviprex and other neuro patients requiring close monitoring. Neuro progressive patients usually advance to floor patients in a few days. The nurse-to-patient ratio for floor patients is typically 1:4 or 5 and in the progressive areas 1:2 or 3, depending on acuity.

Syracuse, New York, presents itself as a viable alternative for RNs looking for a similar environment to Manchester. The healthcare industry in Syracuse is robust, offering competitive pay that often mirrors or surpasses that of Manchester. The cost of living here is reasonable, and housing is more affordable compared to larger metropolitan areas, which can provide a comfortable lifestyle for nurses. The city’s rich history and cultural offerings, such as museums, theaters, and festivals, create a vibrant community. Additionally, Syracuse experiences a distinct four-season climate, allowing residents to enjoy winter sports and summer activities.

Nashua, New Hampshire, is another city that mirrors Manchester in many ways, especially for working as a Progressive Care Unit RN. The pay range for nurses in Nashua is competitive, and the cost of living is slightly higher than in Manchester but still manageable, given the proximity to Boston. Housing options in Nashua are diverse, providing everything from historic homes to modern condos. The city’s location offers easy access to major urban centers, while it retains a small-town feel, making it ideal for those who enjoy community living. Nashua is also known for its parks, rail trails, and local events, ensuring an active and engaging lifestyle for its residents.

Lastly, Portland, Maine, offers a coastal alternative with a slightly different vibe while retaining similarities in nursing opportunities for RNs. The pay for nurses can be competitive, often aligned with that of Manchester, but the cost of living may be higher due to its desirable waterfront location. Housing options include charming historic homes and modern lofts, appealing to those who appreciate a vibrant downtown scene. The lifestyle in Portland is characterized by a strong emphasis on local cuisine, arts, and outdoor adventures, with access to beaches and hiking trails. While their climate shares similarities with New Hampshire, the coastal influences provide a unique twist to the lifestyle enjoyed by Portland residents.
