A Childhood Diagnosis that Shaped Her Path

Diagnosed with hydrocephalus—a condition that causes fluid buildup on the brain—Mary’s future appeared uncertain. Doctors were unsure if she would walk or talk. However, with intervention from physical and speech therapy, Mary defied the odds.

Her sessions with speech therapists were crucial in building her confidence and communication skills. Reflecting on this, Mary humorously states, “I must have been born talking because I haven’t stopped since!” Today, her bold personality is a testament to that early work, proving how critical skilled SLPs are in fostering independence.

Thriving in the ACCESS Program at Mississippi State

Mary's determination led her to the ACCESS Program at Mississippi State University—an inclusive academic experience designed to support students with disabilities. During her time at Mississippi State, Mary’s confidence grew both socially and academically.

The program’s focus on life skills was particularly impactful. From budgeting to understanding "wants vs. needs," Mary learned independence with real-world application. By the time she graduated in 2023, she had also participated in internships that helped her discover her career interests, including a front-desk role at the TK Martin Center for assistive technology.

This milestone not only symbolized her personal growth but also showcased the importance of inclusive education programs in unlocking potential.

Advocacy Through Public Speaking

Mary’s public speaking career began with inspiration from her late Aunt Becky, who was a professor. Fueled by a desire to educate others, Mary embarked on a mission to create more inclusive environments for people with disabilities.

Today, she serves as an advocate at the Children’s Hospital of Alabama. She is also well-known for her YouTube series, “The Awesome Mary Show,” where she blends humor and heartfelt insights to share what it’s like living with a disability.

One of her most memorable speaking engagements was serving as a Master of Ceremonies at the Journey of Hope event. Through her advocacy, Mary continues to break barriers and open doors, addressing critical issues faced by the disability community.

Her work proves one thing loudly and clearly—when people share their stories, the world listens.

Recognized for Her Impact

Mary’s outstanding contributions to advocacy have been widely recognized. A four-time award winner, her accolades include:

  • The Self-Advocate of Distinction Award (2024)
  • The Jeff Ridgeway Advocacy Award
  • The Vulcan Community Award
  • Recognition as one of Alabama Public Television's Young Heroes

These achievements highlight the lives she has touched and her impact as a leader in reshaping how society views disability.

Resilience in the Face of Adversity

Mary’s spirit is truly unshakable. To date, she has undergone an astonishing 44 brain surgeries—each one an immense challenge but one met with optimism. Mary approaches life with a focus on the positives, saying, “I take one thing at a time, so I don’t get overwhelmed.”

She now works in the speech and hearing clinic at Children’s Hospital of Alabama, where she supports therapy sessions and helps children feel seen and included. Her everyday contributions reflect her passion for creating environments where everyone belongs.
