Wellness: Caring for You so You Can Care for Others

We understand the incredible pressure this crisis puts on clinicians like you and we want to take a moment to remind you of the importance of taking care of yourself. The long hours, extra shifts and worried patients can take a toll on your health and well-being. While you may not have a lot of time during your day, you can start with a few simple tips to help manage your stress level and make your own wellness a priority.

A few moments of calm.

Take 1 minute to stretch, relax your body, and take some calming, deep breaths. While that may sound obvious, many of us forget to relax and center ourselves throughout the day.

Listen to your smartwatch, if you have one. Those reminders to breathe deeply can help.

Stay hydrated and don’t forget to eat.

When you’re busy, time can get away from you. The best thing you can do for yourself and your patients is to keep your energy up. Try not to skip your water and healthy meals or snack breaks.

  • Tip – Keep healthy snacks (bars, nuts, etc.) in your locker in case you need them so you don’t have to reach for the high sugar alternatives.

Stay Connected with Friends and Family.

Reach out to a friend via phone, text or social during your break. A quick check in/pep up from a friend or family member can go a long way in lifting your spirits and giving you a brief outlet.

Grab a book or grab a laugh.

Although we all need to be informed, sometimes a little bit of disconnect when you get home and have a chance to unwind can help. Grab a book or magazine and take your mind off of stressors for a while. You might also consider listening to one of the comedy channels or amusing podcasts on your drive home.

Take a walk outside – even for 10 minutes!

According to WebMD, numerous studies show that exercise can provide a positive boost in mood. Even if you can’t get away for a long workout, consider taking a short walk to reduce stress.

  • Tip — At home, consider stretching, yoga or at-home aerobics to keep moving.
  • Tip – Many gyms are now offering free online classes! Check out your favorite gym’s site to see if they are offering recorded or live online classes.

Most of all, remember that you are important, and taking care of you is job #1.
