You will explain the differences between SCS trial and permanent implantation, reviewing each phase in detail, and address common concerns such as procedural discomfort, scarring, body image, managing external leads, wound care, and potential complications. You will function as the central point of contact and liaison for the multidisciplinary team, facilitating communication and shared decision-making. This includes coordinating pre-trial psychological and functional assessments as recommended, ensuring that patient preferences and psychosocial factors are incorporated without solely dictating treatment decisions. Your role is critical in supporting appropriate patient selection for SCS by gathering and documenting clinical, psychological, and social information, and ensuring all required pre-trial evaluations are completed and recorded accurately. During the SCS trial phase, you will prepare patients for what to expect, provide education on trial equipment management, wound care, and activity restrictions, and troubleshoot practical issues related to externalized leads, dressings, and other trial paraphernalia. You will monitor for and promptly report any adverse events or complications to the Pain Physician and team, ensuring patient safety and timely intervention. Assessment and documentation are central to this role. You will collect and document patient-reported outcomes during and after the SCS trial, including percentage improvement in pain relief, functional changes, analgesic use, and overall satisfaction. You will use validated, multidimensional assessment tools for pain and function, and systematically query all pain medication use, including medications taken for non-index pain, recording the reasons for use. Your attention to detail will support evidence-based decision-making about progression from trial to permanent implantation. Expectation management is another key responsibility. You will help patients understand that SCS is designed to improve pain and function but is not a cure and may not result in a completely pain-free state. You will address mood, coping strategies, and psychological factors as part of realistic expectation setting, and reinforce education at each stage of the care pathway. Beyond the trial and implantation phases, you will provide ongoing support and follow-up, ensuring continuity of care. You will assist with transitions to rehabilitation or other services as needed, and remain a consistent, trusted point of contact for patient questions and concerns. Your role will be essential in enhancing patient engagement, adherence, and long-term outcomes.
