Unit Name: Post Cardiothoracic Surgery Number of Beds : 27 licensed beds Patient Population: The Post-Cardiothoracic Surgical Unit consists of 27 beds with 7 private rooms and 10 semi-private rooms. There are no exam rooms on the unit. Patients are received from the Emergency Department, Cardiac Catheterization Lab, Electrophysiology Lab, physician offices, other facilities, and intra-facility transfer (i.e. CPS). The patient population served consists of males and females who are acutely and chronically ill. The primary focus includes both medical and surgical patients with cardiac disease requiring telemetry monitoring. (Refer to the Remote Cardiac Monitoring Station policy). The age of the patients ranges between young adult (18 years) and geriatric (90+ years). Patients requiring C8 services include inpatients, observation status, post-procedure outpatient, extended recovery, and those that have undergone cardiac or thoracic surgery. Our population includes patients who present with a cardiac diagnosis or have undergone a diagnostic, interventional, or surgical procedure and requires telemetry monitoring post-procedure. Continuous pulse oximetry is available and provided to patients based on meeting specific monitoring criteria as outlined in the unit policy (See Unit Scope of Service Manual). Vital signs are completed typically q4 hours or as ordered by the physician, which includes post-procedure vital signs order set, q2 hour vital signs for patient on detox protocol, and q2 hour vital signs for patients on certain vasoactive & antiarrhythmic medications as directed by the formulary. Patients requiring vital signs more frequently may require a higher level of care. Patients with known or suspected cardiac or thoracic disease that are considered stable may be admitted to C8. Other medical/surgical patients will be admitted to C8 as bed availability permits. The Post Cardiothoracic Surgical Unit is located on the 8th floor of the C Building and operates 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.
