SLP Month Spotlight: Meet Kaitlyn C.

Each May, we celebrate National Speech-Language-Hearing Month, an opportunity to recognize the vital role of speech-language pathologists ((SLPs) in transforming lives through communication. SLPs help individuals overcome a wide range of speech and language challenges, from childhood articulation disorders to post-stroke aphasia recovery. This month, we’re shining the spotlight on SLPs who are making a difference in their communities.

Today, we’re excited to introduce Kaitlyn C., a dedicated and inspiring travel SLP who blends her passion for helping others with her adventurous spirit. Kaitlyn’s story is a testament to the incredible impact SLPs have and exemplifies the opportunities available in this rewarding career path.

From Uncertainty to Purpose

Kaitlyn didn’t always know she wanted to be an SLP. Like many of us, she explored her interests and sought clarity on her path. “Growing up, I never knew exactly what I wanted to do,” Kaitlyn shared. While she was torn between teaching and healthcare, it was during her freshman year of college that she discovered speech-language pathology.

SLP proved to be the perfect combination of her interests in education and healthcare. Kaitlyn also credits her personal experiences being on an Individualized Education Program (IEP) for speech and occupational therapy in school as a source of inspiration. The meaningful difference her SLP and OT professionals made in her life motivated her to pay it forward.

“I was excited to make a meaningful difference in the lives of children with communication disorders, just like my SLP and OT did for me,” Kaitlyn explains. This aha moment, paired with the versatility and job security the field offers, solidified her decision to pursue a career helping others communicate effectively.

From patient care to exploring new landscapes, Kaitlyn has found both professional fulfillment and personal growth through her work. And while it’s just the beginning, she’s already looking ahead to new opportunities, eyeing places such as Alaska, Oregon, and Washington state.

Kaitlyn’s Keys to Success

When discussing the keys to her success as an SLP, Kaitlyn underscores two essential elements: relationships and organization.

Building Meaningful Relationships

“For me, building a trusting relationship with patients is key,” Kaitlyn emphasizes. Whether working with children or adults, rapport forms the foundation of effective therapy. Kaitlyn always takes the time to learn about her students’ lives, interests, and hobbies. “If they trust you and enjoy the sessions, they’re much more likely to engage and make progress,” she explains.

Likewise, teamwork is just as critical. Collaborating with case managers, social workers, and other educators gives Kaitlyn greater insight into her students’ needs and allows her to provide holistic care. These relationships also supported Kaitlyn during her early days of navigating unfamiliar procedures, such as leading IEP meetings.

Staying Organized

SLPs often juggle lengthy caseloads, meetings, and administrative tasks, and Kaitlyn has mastered the art of staying organized. From maintaining detailed spreadsheets that track therapy schedules and IEP deadlines to using binders to keep data and activities separate, planning is her secret weapon.

“Making daily and weekly to-do lists has kept me on top of Medicaid billing, scheduling parent meetings, and progress reports,” Kaitlyn shares. These practices, combined with her proactive approach, have helped her meet her responsibilities effectively while finding time for her passions.

Memorable Milestones

When asked about fulfilling moments in her career, Kaitlyn highlights the small wins that add up to big transformations. She recalls working with a preschooler at the start of the school year who could barely say three words. Through consistent therapy, the child is now using 2- and 3-word phrases to express themselves.

Kaitlyn also reminisces about helping a 5th grader with a stutter gain the confidence to contribute in class. “It’s such a great feeling giving them the power of communicating,” she says. These milestones serve as a reminder of why Kaitlyn and so many others choose this career—to empower others and change lives.

Advice for Aspiring SLPs

To new or aspiring SLPs, Kaitlyn offers simple but significant advice: Ask questions and give yourself grace.

“Even the most experienced SLPs don’t know it all,” she insists. From understanding IEP and Medicaid billing systems to troubleshooting day-to-day hurdles, asking questions not only helps SLPs grow but also strengthens teams. Kaitlyn also recommends asking plenty of questions during interviews to ensure a good fit between potential roles and professional goals.

Finally, she reminds aspiring SLPs that nobody is perfect—but mistakes are valuable learning experiences. “You’re going to make mistakes, and that’s okay. Your early work will evolve with experience. Growth is part of the process!”
