The hospital is located in northern Manhattan, offering easy access to the city’s world-class dining, arts, and cultural experiences, from museums and theaters to waterfront parks and historic sites. Nearby green spaces, such as large riverside parks and walking paths along the Hudson River, create a welcoming balance of urban excitement and outdoor recreation. Unit 9 Tower is a high-acuity pediatric intensive care environment that serves children with some of the most complex medical and surgical needs. The unit receives referrals from across the region and beyond, offering exposure to a wide range of conditions including respiratory failure, sepsis, traumatic injuries, complex neurologic disorders, post-operative cardiac and neurosurgical care, and multi-organ dysfunction. Nurses on this unit become experts in managing invasive monitoring, ventilators, advanced airway support, and titrating critical infusions. Daily interdisciplinary rounds and collaborative care planning ensure that nurses are active participants in clinical decision-making and patient advocacy. A typical day for a PICU RN on Unit 9 Tower includes caring for a small number of high-acuity patients, often 1–2 patients per nurse depending on acuity. Responsibilities include continuous assessment and monitoring of vital signs and hemodynamics, managing ventilators and other life-support technologies, administering and titrating critical medications, performing thorough head-to-toe assessments, and responding rapidly to changes in patient status. Nurses also play a key role in educating and supporting families, coordinating discharges or transfers, and participating in unit-based initiatives. The unit environment is supported by advanced technology and equipment, including state-of-the-art monitoring systems, specialized pediatric ventilators, and resources for complex therapies such as ECMO and CRRT. This setting allows nurses to continually develop and refine advanced critical care skills while working with multidisciplinary teams engaged in research, innovation, and high-reliability practices.
