What we talked about:

AMN Healthcare recently hosted a live Q&A session focused on "Tech Tips for Interpreters," specifically addressing video remote interpreting (VRI) technology. The event featured an expert panel, providing valuable insights and practical advice for interpreters transitioning to VRI or seeking to enhance their technical skills.
The session opened with a discussion on how VRI technology has become an essential part of the interpreting industry, especially in healthcare settings, where instant access to qualified interpreters ensures faster and more efficient communication. The panel emphasized the need for interpreters to adopt VRI and thrive in this evolving landscape.

Meet the Panelists

  1. Kristen Burk (Moderator): Recruiting Manager for Language Services at AMN.
  2. Ivan Bermudez (Training Consultant): Certified medical interpreter and training advisor at AMN since 2021.
  3. Emmanuel Chacon (Team Lead Coordinator): Former audio-only interpreter with six years of experience, now a leader in VRI.

Key Tips and Insights for Interpreters

Familiarize Yourself with the Platform

Emmanuel advised new interpreters to spend time practicing with the system to build confidence. AMN provides comprehensive training and a practice environment where interpreters can become comfortable with navigating the platform and equipment before handling live calls.
Ivan reiterated that training includes coaching and hands-on practice to ensure interpreters feel fully prepared.

Create a Professional Workspace

Emmanuel highlighted the importance of setting up a distraction-free, HIPAA-compliant environment when working remotely. This includes ensuring good lighting, a professional background, proper posture, and maintaining eye contact during calls.

Be Technically Prepared

Emmanuel and Paul advised interpreters to prepare for technical glitches by learning how to manage common issues. Paul recommended basic troubleshooting steps like clearing the browser cache, restarting the computer, or checking for scheduled outages.
AMN provides 24/7 technical support, ensuring that interpreters never face technical challenges alone.

Minimal Technical Expertise Required

Both Emmanuel and Paul reassured attendees that interpreters don't need a high level of technical knowledge to succeed in VRI roles. Basic computer skills, combined with practice and support, are sufficient.

Know Where to Seek Help

Interpreters have access to AMN's robust support system, including IT assistance and a dedicated team of leads who are ready to guide them at any time.

The Client's Perspective

Angelina Garcia provided a unique view as a client of AMN, emphasizing the benefits of user-friendly platforms for both interpreters and healthcare providers. She praised the efficiency and convenience of VRI technology in critical healthcare scenarios, calling it a vital tool for immediate and effective communication.

Final Thoughts

The session concluded with the panelists encouraging interpreters to actively engage with the training resources provided by AMN, practice frequently, and rely on support systems for a smooth transition into VRI. They emphasized that strong technical preparation, coupled with a professional remote setup, sets interpreters up for success in a rapidly evolving industry.
The event provided attendees with an in-depth understanding of VRI technology and practical strategies for adopting it confidently. For those looking to begin or enhance their career in interpreting with AMN, the panel highlighted both the company's supportive framework and the growing need for interpreters adept in remote technologies.
