Healthcare organizations need to prepare themselves for changing trends revealed in the 2017 Survey of Registered Nurses by AMN Healthcare and The Center for the Advancement of Healthcare Professionals. The wave of retirements among Baby-Boomer nurses is already underway, impacting nursing shortages, which nurses themselves say are becoming markedly worse. Nurses want more nurses entering the ranks of healthcare leadership, in part because they don’t feel adequately supported by current leaders. However, most nurses don’t want to become leaders themselves, although Millennial nurses are more likely to see leadership positions in their future. Another change is the movement toward national licensure, which most nurses see as a benefit to their careers. The biennial survey is provided to enhance understanding of this vital profession to the healthcare industry and the nation.
