How to Get One

Like many other states, there are two primary pathways to obtaining a Rhode Island nursing license:

  • Examination
  • Endorsement

Nurses who hold an active license in another state may apply by endorsement, while new graduates must obtain a license by examination. The licensing fee is currently $135.

July 10, 2023, Rhode Island officially became the 41st state to pass legislation and join the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) and will be implemented January 2024. Soon if you're licensed in Rhode Island, you can now work in the other 40 states in the compact through a much simpler and quicker approval process.
