Nurse Licensure Compact States

What is the Compact Licensure for Nursing?

The Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) allows nurses to obtain a multi-state nursing license, enabling them to practice in other nursing compact states without having to apply for additional licensure. The Nurse Licensure Compact is especially beneficial for travel nurses, as it allows RNs to travel to multiple states without having to deal with the costs and time associated with getting additional nursing licensure.

How to Get Your Compact Nursing License

In order to obtain a compact nursing license, individuals must meet the requirements set forth by the NCSBN below:

  • Individuals must legally reside in a designated nursing compact state. (See list above)
  • Individuals must hold an active RN or LPN/VN nursing license that’s in good standing with the BON
  • Individuals must declare a compact nursing state as their primary state of residence.
  • Individuals must meet the nursing licensure requirements in their home state (i.e. primary state of residence).

*For more detailed instructions on how to get your multi-state nursing license, visit the NCBSN website.

Living In a Compact State?

If you live in one of the compact states, and are actively licensed as a registered nurse, you are eligible to travel and work in another compact state.

Moving to a Compact State?

If you are moving to another compact state, you will need to apply by endorsement for that states’ license.

Non-Compact State to a Compact State

If your primary state of residency is not a compact state, you are not eligible for a compact state license (multi-state nursing license). Your eligibility will be limited to a single-state license that is valid in that state only.

Nurse Compact to a Non-Compact State

If you’re moving from a nurse compact state to a non-compact state, you’re required to apply for a new licensure by endorsement in your new home state. You may not use your multistate license in the non-compact state.
