Navigating the Montana Nursing License

Applicants for a Montana nursing license by endorsement must submit:

  • Completed license application, either submitted online or printed from the website and mailed to the Montana Board of Nursing;
  • Payment of $200 fee for RN license by endorsement;
  • License verification from the state or territory in which the applicant currently holds an active nursing license in good standing, or has ever held a nursing license. If the state is part of NURSYS, a verification must be through this system; otherwise, a verification must come from the licensing source;
  • Documentation, including jurisdiction and date, of any previous professional license denial or withdrawal of application;
  • Fingerprints for the purpose of a fingerprint and background check;
  • Official final transcript from applicant’s nursing education program, if not verified through NURSYS.

How to Renew Your MT Nursing License

Simple Steps

The renewal period for nursing licenses occurs every other year. Nurses originally licensed in odd-numbered years should continue to renew their license by December 31st of odd-numbered years. “Even” licensees can apply for their Montana nursing license renewal by December 31st of even-numbered years. Applicants must pay the renewal fee of $100 and complete 24 contact hours of continuing education every two years, due by the time of license renewal.

Montana participates in the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC), also called the Enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC), which allows RNs or LPNs to have one multistate nursing license. If you hold a multistate license in a compact state, issued by your primary state of residency, you can practice in any of the other compact member states—including Montana.
