This temporary RT:CT contract position offers a rare and rewarding opportunity to practice in Barrow (Utqiagvik), Alaska, one of the northernmost communities in the United States. Located on the shores of the Arctic Ocean, Barrow combines the rugged beauty of Alaska’s North Slope with a rich Iñupiat culture and a strong sense of community. Providers here enjoy truly unique experiences such as extended daylight in the summer, the possibility of viewing the northern lights in the darker months, and the chance to explore the stunning tundra and coastal landscapes. Despite its remote location, Barrow offers essential amenities, close-knit neighborhoods, and a welcoming environment for temporary healthcare professionals. This critical access hospital is the oldest healthcare facility in Alaska, now housed in a modern facility opened in 2013. It serves more than 8,000 patients spread across approximately 94,000 square miles, including Barrow and six surrounding villages. The facility includes 4 emergency room rooms, 8 inpatient rooms, and a 13-room outpatient clinic, allowing radiology technologists to support a broad spectrum of patient needs ranging from emergent cases to routine outpatient imaging. The environment is well suited for technologists who enjoy meaningful work, broad responsibilities, and the opportunity to see the immediate impact of their contributions in a small community. The modality mix for this assignment is RT:CT. The position requires a technologist who is very confident in both radiography and CT. Radiography work is basic RT with no fluoroscopy. CT imaging is focused primarily on abdomen and head studies. The department uses a GE CT scanner and DR x-ray equipment, and the technologist must have prior experience with GE systems. Experience with Siemens equipment is also required, as the facility utilizes multiple platforms. This setting is ideal for technologists who enjoy hands-on work with advanced imaging technology while still maintaining a close connection to patients and clinical teams. A typical day may include performing basic radiographic exams, CT abdomen and CT head studies, and occasionally supporting or coordinating imaging needs for village health clinics, including X-ray services when appropriate. Because this is a critical access hospital, technologists should expect to manage a wide variety of cases, from walk-in outpatient imaging to emergency department and inpatient studies. Workflows are collaborative, with technologists working closely with physicians, nursing staff, and other allied health professionals. The smaller patient volume compared with large urban centers is balanced by a wide variety of exam types and the need for adaptability and efficiency in a resource-conscious environment. The contract length is 13 weeks, with variable shifts and participation in an on-call rotation. On-call coverage rotates every third weekend from 8:00 a.m. Saturday through 7:30 a.m. Monday. This schedule provides significant exposure to emergent and urgent cases while allowing for predictable off-call weekends. The facility operates with a focus on patient-centered care and relies on technologists who can prioritize patient safety, maintain high-quality imaging standards, and function independently when needed, especially during off-hours. Shared housing is a key benefit of this assignment. The facility provides shared housing units that include a private bedroom for each occupant, with shared bathroom, kitchen, and living areas. Linens and dishes are provided, simplifying relocation and allowing travelers to arrive with minimal personal items. Pets are not permitted in the shared housing. Transportation to and from work is also provided, typically via taxi, which is the primary mode of transportation in Barrow. Taxi rides to other destinations in the community are straightforward and affordable, making it easy to navigate the town without a personal vehicle. Working in this environment provides an excellent resume-building opportunity. Technologists gain experience in a critical access hospital, delivering care in a remote Arctic setting, and operating with significant autonomy and responsibility. The position offers exposure to diverse patient populations, cross-training in multiple modalities, and collaboration within a smaller, highly cohesive clinical team. This assignment is particularly suited for professionals who value meaningful work, adaptability, and the chance to be part of a community where their skills have a direct and visible impact.
