This temporary RT:CT contract position offers a rare and rewarding opportunity to practice in Barrow (Utqiagvik), Alaska, one of the northernmost communities in the United States. Located on the shores of the Arctic Ocean, Barrow combines the rugged beauty of Alaska’s North Slope with a rich Iñupiat culture and a strong sense of community. Providers here enjoy truly unique experiences such as extended daylight in the summer, the possibility of viewing the northern lights in the darker months, and the chance to explore the stunning tundra and coastal landscapes. Despite its remote location, Barrow offers essential amenities, close-knit neighborhoods, and a welcoming environment for temporary healthcare professionals. This critical access hospital is the oldest healthcare facility in Alaska, now housed in a modern facility opened in 2013. It serves more than 8,000 patients spread across approximately 94,000 square miles, including Barrow and six surrounding villages. The facility includes 4 emergency room rooms, 8 inpatient rooms, and a 13-room outpatient clinic, allowing radiology technologists to support a broad spectrum of patient needs ranging from emergent cases to routine outpatient imaging. The environment is well suited for technologists who enjoy meaningful work, broad responsibilities, and the opportunity to see the immediate impact of their contributions in a small community. The modality mix for this assignment is RT:CT. The position requires a technologist who is very confident in both radiography and CT. Radiography work is basic RT with no fluoroscopy. CT imaging is focused primarily on abdomen and head studies. The department uses a GE CT scanner and DR x-ray equipment, and the technologist must have prior experience with GE systems. Experience with Siemens equipment is also required, as the facility utilizes multiple platforms. This setting is ideal for technologists who enjoy hands-on work with advanced imaging technology while still maintaining a close connection to patients and clinical teams. A typical day may include performing basic radiographic exams, CT abdomen and CT head studies, and occasionally supporting or coordinating imaging needs for village health clinics, including X-ray services when appropriate. Because this is a critical access hospital, technologists should expect to manage a wide variety of cases, from walk-in outpatient imaging to emergency department and inpatient studies. Workflows are collaborative, with technologists working closely with physicians, nursing staff, and other allied health professionals. The smaller patient volume compared with large urban centers is balanced by a wide variety of exam types and the need for adaptability and efficiency in a resource-conscious environment. The contract length is 13 weeks, with variable shifts and participation in an on-call rotation. On-call coverage rotates every third weekend from 8:00 a.m. Saturday through 7:30 a.m. Monday. This schedule provides significant exposure to emergent and urgent cases while allowing for predictable off-call weekends. The facility operates with a focus on patient-centered care and relies on technologists who can prioritize patient safety, maintain high-quality imaging standards, and function independently when needed, especially during off-hours. Shared housing is a key benefit of this assignment. The facility provides shared housing units that include a private bedroom for each occupant, with shared bathroom, kitchen, and living areas. Linens and dishes are provided, simplifying relocation and allowing travelers to arrive with minimal personal items. Pets are not permitted in the shared housing. Transportation to and from work is also provided, typically via taxi, which is the primary mode of transportation in Barrow. Taxi rides to other destinations in the community are straightforward and affordable, making it easy to navigate the town without a personal vehicle. Working in this environment provides an excellent resume-building opportunity. Technologists gain experience in a critical access hospital, delivering care in a remote Arctic setting, and operating with significant autonomy and responsibility. The position offers exposure to diverse patient populations, cross-training in multiple modalities, and collaboration within a smaller, highly cohesive clinical team. This assignment is particularly suited for professionals who value meaningful work, adaptability, and the chance to be part of a community where their skills have a direct and visible impact.

Like Barrow, Nome is a remote Alaskan city with a small population, making it an appealing destination for those seeking a quieter lifestyle. The average salary for a CT Tech in Nome is comparable to that in Barrow, with wages reflecting the unique challenges and cost of living associated with working in such a location. The housing options tend to be fairly limited due to the geographic isolation, but there are opportunities for rental housing, often in single-family homes or small apartments. The climate is polar, with long, cold winters and short summers, ideal for outdoor pursuits like snowmobiling or enjoying the picturesque landscapes of the Arctic.

Another city to consider is Bethel, Alaska, which shares several similarities with Barrow in terms of work as a CT Tech. Bethel has a higher cost of living than the U.S. average, particularly due to the challenges of accessing goods and services in the region. However, the pay range for healthcare positions, including CT Techs, tends to be higher to account for this cost. Housing options are primarily limited to rentals or shared accommodations, and the city’s location provides a unique lifestyle that revolves around local culture and community events. Bethel’s climate is also arctic, with harsh winters, creating a distinct experience for those who embrace it, and there are recreational activities such as fishing, hunting, and cultural festivals that highlight local traditions.

Another comparable city is Anchorage, Alaska, which, while larger than Barrow, still captures the essence of a remote lifestyle with many professional opportunities. The pay for a CT Tech in Anchorage typically aligns with that found in Barrow but may be slightly lower due to the reduced cost of living. Housing options in Anchorage can range from affordable apartments to more spacious homes, making it easier for CT Techs to find suitable living arrangements. The climate is subarctic, with similar winter conditions but slightly milder summers, and the city offers access to outdoor adventures, ranging from hiking and skiing to enjoying the vibrant arts scene and community events.

A different setting can be found in Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, known primarily for its oil production but also offering opportunities for healthcare professionals such as CT Techs. The pay in Prudhoe Bay is usually higher than in Barrow due to the specialized nature of the work in this industrial environment, but the cost of living can be equally high. Housing is often provided by employers in the form of temporary accommodations, making it a unique living situation. The climate here is extremely cold in winter, mirroring Barrow’s harsh conditions. Lifestyle options focus heavily on work commitments, but there are opportunities for occasional outdoor activities such as fishing and hiking during the brief summer months.

Finally, the remote town of Kotzebue, Alaska, presents another alternative for CT Techs looking for a unique working environment similar to Barrow’s. The pay scale for CT Techs in Kotzebue is competitive, and while the cost of living is high, it is somewhat tempered by the availability of government subsidies for housing and basic necessities. The housing market consists mostly of rentals and can be challenging due to limited availability. The climate in Kotzebue shares characteristics with Barrow’s arctic climate, consisting of long winters and a short summer season, appealing to those who appreciate outdoor recreation and cultural connections. With a focus on community and local traditions, life in Kotzebue can be both fulfilling and enriching for those who embrace the Alaskan lifestyle.
