Typical responsibilities include administering oxygen and aerosol therapies, managing bronchial hygiene, drawing and analyzing arterial blood gases, performing noninvasive ventilation, and initiating and monitoring mechanical ventilation. You may participate in rapid response and code teams and play an integral role in stabilizing and supporting critically ill patients. Your typical day may include performing respiratory assessments, adjusting ventilator settings based on patient status and clinical protocols, educating patients and families on respiratory conditions and home equipment, and documenting care in the electronic medical record. Depending on the specific unit, patient ratios are designed to promote safe, high-quality care, with attention to matching caseloads to acuity levels. Therapists may work across multiple care areas, such as medical-surgical units, intensive care units, the emergency department, and step-down units, providing varied clinical experiences and opportunities to build specialized skills.
