Travel MRI Tech Requirements: Experience, Certifications, and More

If you're an MRI technologist thinking about taking your skills on the road, the first question on your mind is probably, “What do I actually need to qualify?” Travel MRI tech requirements include a combination of hands-on clinical experience, the right certifications, proper education, and state licensure. Once you understand the full picture, the path from staff MRI tech to travel MRI tech is more straightforward than you might think.

What Experience Do You Need?

Most travel MRI tech positions require one to two years of recent clinical MRI experience. Requirements vary by facility and assignment. Some roles accept one year, while others require two or more years depending on equipment complexity and patient volume.

Travel MRI technologists are expected to hit the ground running. Facilities need confidence that you can work independently from day one, troubleshoot equipment issues, and produce diagnostic-quality images without extensive supervision.

Versatility matters. Experience with multiple MRI scanner brands, including both 1.5T and 3T systems, and a variety of exam protocols from neuro to cardiac makes you significantly more marketable.

The bottom line: Two years of solid, recent MRI experience is the sweet spot. If you're at one year, some opportunities exist, but that second year opens significantly more doors.

Education Requirements

MRI technologists typically need an associate’s degree from an accredited program. The most common route is completing a two-year program in radiologic technology, followed by MRI training.

Programs accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) are preferred, as this accreditation supports eligibility for ARRT certification.

There are two primary pathways to earning MRI credentials through the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). The primary pathway applies to individuals who complete an approved MRI program directly. The post-primary pathway is for radiologic technologists who add MRI certification after already holding ARRT credentials. This is the most common route for technologists transitioning into travel MRI roles.

Certification Requirements for AMN Healthcare

ARRT certification in MRI is required for the majority of AMN Healthcare travel assignments.

The accepted credential is: ARRT, R.T.(MR)

While other MRI credentials exist, AMN Healthcare aligns with facility expectations nationwide and prioritizes ARRT certification for travel MRI technologists.

In addition to MRI certification, current BLS certification is required for all travel assignments.

MRI technologists must also maintain active credentials through continuing education to remain eligible for assignments.

State Licensure

Licensure requirements vary by state. Some states require a radiologic technologist license, while others do not mandate licensure specifically for MRI.

Travel MRI technologists are responsible for maintaining active licenses for the states where they accept assignments. AMN Healthcare recruiters assist with verifying requirements and coordinating licensure documentation as part of the credentialing process.

Job Outlook and Demand

The outlook for MRI technologists remains strong. Employment is projected to grow through the next decade as demand for diagnostic imaging continues to rise. For travelers, this translates into more job opportunities, a wider range of locations, and increased flexibility in choosing assignments.
