Claudia's Journey to Becoming an SLP

For Claudia, the decision to pursue a career in speech-language pathology was sparked by a volunteer experience at a pediatric skilled nursing facility. Working with children with disabilities and complex medical conditions, Claudia witnessed the life-altering impact SLPs made on their young patients.

“It was amazing to see how much SLPs could enhance these children’s quality of life,” Claudia recalls. Inspired by their ability to unlock voices and create meaningful communication pathways, Claudia knew she had found her calling.

Her professional path eventually led her to work as a traveler, a role that allows her to care for diverse populations in different settings, providing the flexibility to make an even broader impact.

Keys to Success in SLP Practice

Claudia attributes much of her success to her positive mindset and open-minded approach. Currently working with elementary students in a program for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), she starts each day with enthusiasm and a willingness to learn as much from her students as she teaches them.

“Some sessions are definitely challenging,” Claudia admits, “but there’s always something positive to take away. My students show me that every day is an opportunity to grow.”

Her focus on building strong relationships also plays a crucial role in her daily work. Collaborating with paraprofessionals and teachers has been essential to understanding her students’ needs and creating an empowering classroom environment.

The Power of Collaboration

Claudia believes that one of the most effective ways to set students up for success is by fostering teamwork among everyone involved in their education. At the beginning of each new assignment, she spends substantial time observing students in their classrooms. This helps her understand the interactions between students, teachers, and paraprofessionals while gaining insights into the existing communication dynamics.

“Each student has a 1:1 paraprofessional, and they’re often the ones who know the kids best,” says Claudia. “Taking the time to learn from their experiences has been invaluable, and they’ve also greatly benefited from the guidance I’ve provided on how to support their students’ communication goals.”

This collaborative effort ensures that students receive consistent support across all aspects of their learning environment.

The Joy of Making Speech Therapy Fun

For Claudia, some of the most fulfilling moments in her career occur when she sees children genuinely excited about attending speech therapy. One experience in particular stands out.

“When I walk into a classroom and hear kids eagerly ask, ‘Is it my turn?!’ it’s incredibly rewarding,” Claudia explains. “It’s a reminder that learning doesn’t have to feel like work. My students achieve their goals by having fun and being fully engaged.”

Claudia approaches each session with creativity, striving to make exercises feel more like games than lessons. This not only fosters a positive attitude toward therapy but also helps students build confidence in their abilities.

Advice for Aspiring SLPs

When asked to offer advice for new and aspiring SLPs, Claudia emphasizes the importance of openness and adaptability.

“My biggest piece of advice is to be open to new experiences and challenges,” she shares. “Those are the moments where we learn and grow.”

Similarly, National Speech-Language-Hearing Month is a timely reminder of the opportunities available to SLPs to make a significant impact. With ASHA’s 2025 Centennial approaching, this year marks a unique chance to reflect on how the profession has evolved over the past century and shaped countless lives.
