When Language Access Becomes a Lifeline: Dr. Rick Arnold's Story
Some partnerships prove their worth in numbers. Others prove it in moments that stay with you for years. For Dr. Rick Arnold, both are true.
Dr. Arnold has served patients at Seattle King County Clinic through years of high-volume, high-stakes care. The clinic delivers free medical, dental, and vision services to thousands of people across a single week, many of whom face barriers that keep them from care the rest of the year. In his testimonial, Dr. Arnold reflects on what a decade of consistent language support has meant to that mission.

A Partnership Lasting More Than a Decade
AMN Healthcare Language Services has supported the Seattle King County Clinic since 2014. For Dr. Arnold, that consistency changed how the clinic operates year after year.
"It's been a tremendous asset for the clinic to have a consistent language interpretive service throughout the existence of the clinic," he shares. "It's gotten better and better over time. AMN has been responsive to our needs, has improved the service every year that I've been involved with the clinic."
That kind of reliability matters when the scale of need is large. During a single clinic week, Dr. Arnold's team fielded more than 41,622 minutes (694 hours) of interpretation across 49 languages. About half of all patients at the clinic require interpretation services to receive care.
Those numbers reflect a simple truth: without reliable interpretation, the clinic could not serve its community. As Dr. Arnold puts it, real-time interpreter support "cements the success of this clinic and allows us to actually serve our community."
More Than Language: Culture, Confidentiality, and Trust
Professional interpretation does more than translate words. Dr. Arnold explains that trained interpreters bridge culture in both directions, helping patients understand Western medicine, while helping providers understand where each patient is coming from.
Confidentiality plays a role, too. When clinics rely on family members or community members to interpret, patients often hold back.
"They may have a personal relationship with the patient or be a member of the community, so that the patient is reluctant to share," Dr. Arnold notes. "Having professional interpretation is an absolute necessity."
That trust runs deeper than logistics. "People get so surprised when they actually get spoken to in their own language," he says. "When it is done well, I think it's very refreshing for people, and they feel like, oh, these people really care about me."
A Moment That Mattered
When asked to share an instance when language access made a significant difference, one story stayed with Dr. Arnold.
A pregnant, non-English-speaking patient arrived hoping for a dental procedure. While waiting in line, she went into active labor and did not understand what was happening or why the team wanted to change course.
"It became a negotiation with her, and having a professional interpreter who could dissect her understanding of what we were telling her was a game changer," Dr. Arnold recalls. The interpreter helped the team explain the situation, agree on a care plan, and get her to the hospital in time. "I don't think that would have been possible without a professional interpreter."
What Reliability Feels Like
For Dr. Arnold, the value of the partnership shows up before the first patient even arrives. Setting up each year, he walks past the statues of dancers in the opera house and sees the AMN devices arranged and ready.
"It feels like, oh, I'm home. We're well prepared. We've got what we need, and we're going to be able to do a good job here for the next few days."
That sense of readiness reflects what a dependable language services partner can offer any organization committed to equitable care: fewer barriers, stronger trust, and more time spent where it matters most: with patients.
If your team is working to remove language barriers and reach every patient you serve, we're ready to work alongside you.
