SLP Full Disclosure Ep. 114 Recap: Finding Your Why

Speech-language pathology (SLP) is more than just a profession. For many, it’s a calling. With its unique blend of science, creativity, and the chance to profoundly impact lives, it’s not surprising that SLPs often find themselves answering the "why" behind their career choice. For some, the path is straightforward; for others, it’s a winding road filled with discovery, reflection, and purpose.

Finding your "why" is about understanding what drives you—from the passion fueling your every session to the bigger picture of why you chose this vital career path in the first place. This blog dives deep into host Michelle Gage’s personal story, which she shared on episode 114 of the SLP Full Disclosure podcast, while offering practical advice for fellow speech pathologists, students, and clinical fellows to identify their "why" and reignite the passion for their work.

Speech-Language Pathology Found Me

Some of us decide on our careers early in life, but for host Michelle Gage, speech-language pathology seemed to choose her. “I vividly recall working at a residential facility, where adults born in the ’60s and ’70s with no means to communicate were struggling in silence. The day I was introduced to augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) by a speech-language pathologist was nothing short of life-changing,” she reflects.

“This experience sparked something in me that I couldn’t ignore. Witnessing firsthand how communication tools could open up a new world for these individuals left me inspired and determined to pursue a career that enabled others to find their voice. From that moment, I knew I had to switch my focus, and that decision led me down the path of SLP.”

Early Inspiration and My Journey Into Academics

After discovering this calling, Michelle’s academic path became crystal clear. Her first phonetics class wasn’t just interesting; it was exhilarating. “Something clicked as I explored communicative disorders, and it felt like the most natural fit. At Ole Miss, everything from coursework to clinical exposure validated my decision.”

Like many SLPs, she didn’t know where her career would take her or which population she would enjoy working with most. However, starting as a blank slate allowed her to absorb, learn, and grow, both academically and professionally.

The Heart of SLP Work Is Serving

“Through my years as an SLP, one word that has continually shaped my approach is "serve." This simple but profound concept underpins everything we do. When I think about the students, families, or patients I’ve worked with, I don’t just see them as people on a caseload. I see them as individuals I’m here to serve. Their success is my true motivator,” shares Michelle.

Serving others, whether through helping children overcome speech challenges or guiding families during difficult diagnoses, requires humility, empathy, and a giving spirit. SLPs are in a unique position to transform lives—not just through therapy but by forming meaningful connections and building trust.

“This perspective was further deepened during my faith experience in a Holy Thursday feet-washing ceremony. The act of serving, as a reflection of humility, became ingrained in my personal and professional life.”

When It Felt Like the End of the Road

No career is without challenges, and Michelle’s hasn’t been any different. By 2017, she found herself at a low point. “I felt uninspired and disconnected and even considered leaving the field. It was a profoundly difficult period, as I wondered if my passion had burnt out,” she says of the experience.

But sometimes, the toughest moments pave the way for personal growth. “For me, a leap of faith reinvigorated my career. When I stepped into a travel position, it reignited my sense of purpose. Each assignment introduced me to new communities, challenges, and opportunities, culminating in immense satisfaction. This was also when I discovered joy through new roles, such as hosting the SLP Full Disclosure podcast.”

Rediscovering the Joy in Connection

One of the most joyful aspects of being an SLP is the connections we create. Whether it’s with children in early intervention, students in school settings, or adults in rehabilitation facilities, these relationships fuel our passion.

“I remember working with Amarion, a young boy from Baltimore, through early intervention. While our therapeutic time together ended years ago, his family continues to send videos of him wishing me happy birthday every year. These moments are not just heartwarming; they’re a constant reminder that this career creates bonds that go far beyond therapy sessions.”

Similarly, there’s nothing like seeing the light in a child’s eyes when they finally master a sound they’ve been struggling with. Those small victories are huge milestones, not just for the child but also for their families and for you as an SLP.

Practical Tips to Find Your "Why" as an SLP

Rediscovering your purpose doesn’t always come naturally. Here are some actionable tips to help you reconnect with your "why":

  1. Reflect on What Inspired You

Think back to the moment you decided to become an SLP. What compelled you? Whether it’s a specific memory, a class, or an experience, reliving that moment can help remind you why you chose this field in the first place.

  1. Connect With Your Clients on a Personal Level

Look beyond therapy objectives and take the time to truly get to know the individuals you’re working with. Understanding their stories can reignite your dedication and remind you of the impact you have.

  1. Find Joy in Small Wins

Not every day will come with groundbreaking successes, but even the tiniest progress can be a reason to celebrate. Focus on these moments, and use them as fuel.

  1. Learn From Other SLPs

Ask your colleagues what inspires them. Their answers might resonate with you or spark new inspiration.

  1. Reassess Your Mission Regularly

As you grow in your career, your "why" may evolve. Take time to reflect on your current goals and where you want to go. Journaling your experiences and thoughts can help provide clarity.

  1. Reconnect With Your Community

Join a professional community like the SLP Full Disclosure group to connect with others who share your experiences, challenges, and passion. Having a professional support network is invaluable for staying motivated and inspired.
