On June 25th, we tuned in with Albert, Oksana, and Ursula to gain valuable insights into the art of note-taking as an interpreter, particularly in the medical field. These experts shared their experiences and tips on how medical interpreters can set themselves up for success while working with AMN Healthcare. They discussed the unique challenges faced by interpreters in healthcare settings and provided practical advice on how to improve note-taking skills, stay organized, and manage the complexities of interpreting for patients and medical professionals. Whether you're a seasoned interpreter or just starting out, their insights offer valuable guidance for excelling in this critical role.

Topics of Discussion:

Why is Note-taking Important for Medical Interpreters?

Albert explained that medical interpreters are human and can only retain so much information. A well-organized note-taking system allows interpreters to refer back to key points, improving accuracy. With practice, listening skills and note efficiency improve, helping interpreters maintain clarity in conversations.

What Should Medical Interpreters Always Write Down?

Oksana emphasized that medical interpreters should always write down names, numbers, dates of birth, and addresses. She noted that in different countries, date formats vary, which can lead to misunderstandings. Writing things down ensures accuracy, particularly with prescriptions, dosages, and appointment details.

What is the Subject-verb-object Method, and How Does it Help?

Albert described the subject-verb-object (SVO) method, which structures information clearly. For example, instead of writing full sentences, the interpreter notes down key elements:

  • Patient (subject)
  • Needs medication (verb)
  • Twice a day (object)

This ensures interpreters don’t get lost in long phrases and can quickly reconstruct the message.

How Does the Diagonal Method Work?

Albert explained that in the diagonal method, subjects are placed on the left, verbs in the middle, and objects on the right. This visual approach makes it easier to follow ideas and prevents information from getting mixed up.

Does AMN Healthcare Provide Training on Note-taking?

Ursula confirmed that AMN offers structured training based on best practices from experts like Andrew Gillies. Training covers:

  • Using symbols and abbreviations
  • Structuring notes effectively
  • Determining what information is most important to capture

Regular practice is encouraged to make note-taking second nature.

How to Improve Note-taking as a Medical Interpreter?

Albert, Oksana, and Ursula all agreed that practice makes perfect. They emphasized that the more you practice your note-taking and interpreting skills, the more confident and efficient you'll become. It’s not about getting everything perfect right away, but about consistently refining your technique. They suggested setting aside time each day to practice, whether through mock scenarios or reviewing past interpretations, to build muscle memory and improve your accuracy over time.
