2024 Survey of Hospital Nurse Leaders

This new survey of hospital Chief Nursing Officers, Chief Nursing Executives and other nurse leaders examines the roles, challenges, and workforce solutions being employed by influential hospital executives.    

The survey highlights the nursing workforce management tools and technologies nurse leaders are implementing to address nurse shortages, scheduling issues and retention challenges. 

Key findings:  

  • Eighty-one percent of nurse leaders are moderately to extremely involved in their facility’s strategic mission. 
  • The top three challenges facing nurse leaders are recruitment and retention, staff burnout, and labor shortages. 
  • Seventy-two percent of nurse leaders experience burnout sometimes, often, or always. 
  • Thirty-one percent of nurse leaders plan to change positions in the next year. 
  • The three most useful workforce management and support tools are telehealth, medical interpreter services, and recruitment process outsourcing (RPO)
