Inclusive Opportunities for Blind and Low Vision Interpreters
As proud sponsors of the National Federation of the Blind (NFB) Convention, we're committed to expanding accessibility and inclusivity for blind and low vision interpreters. Our partnership with the National Federation of the Blind is a testament to our dedication to create an inclusive environment, helping individuals to thrive and excel in their interpreting careers.
About the National Federation of the Blind (NFB)
The National Federation of the Blind (NFB) is a leading organization dedicated to advocating for the rights and opportunities of blind people. The NFB provides training, support, and resources to empower individuals to live the lives they want. Their annual convention, the largest gathering of blind individuals in the world, offers a platform for networking, learning, and influencing policy.
Sponsorship of the 2024 NFB Convention
This year, the NFB Convention took place from July 3-8 in Orlando, Florida. We were honored to participate, with our team members engaging attendees at our booth. Deanna Isham (Talent Acquisition Consultant), Karol Austen (Language Ops Manager), Karla Reina (Talent Acquisition Supervisor), Kenneth Quang (Language Ops Manager), and Jessica Hoffman (ASL Interpreter) were present, sharing information about our language services and job opportunities.
Expanding Access for Blind and Low Vision Interpreters
We know creating a supportive environment for blind and low vision interpreters requires more than just good intentions. Equipped with the right tools and training, we've made our platforms more accessible and user-friendly. With the collaboration of our engineering and training teams, we ensure that our platforms are accessible to applicants and employees, and that we provide reasonable accommodations including assistive technologies such as JAWS, a popular screen reader program.
Our products and platforms always go through formative, summative, and continuous evaluation to make sure they are accessible for interpreters who are blind. This means that every time there is a platform release throughout the project lifecycle and any time new content is added or code is updated, the engineering teams along with platform users, test the updates to ensure accessibility.
AMN Language Services Spanish interpreter, Bella J., shared, “I am fortunate to be part of the AMN team in a role I have dreamt of since childhood. Helping Spanish-speaking individuals is a blessing, and AMN has made it easy with the necessary tools and resources. The consistent assistance and support availability makes me feel included and valued.”
Inclusivity is at the heart of our mission. We strive to create a workplace where everyone can thrive. Offering adaptive technology and fostering a supportive environment helps pave the way for more blind and low vision individuals to excel in their careers.
Another AMN Spanish interpreter, Nancy U., knows first-hand the value of qualified medical interpreters. She explains, “I relied on interpreting services when I came to the U.S. many years ago, so I know the impact we have on patients’ lives. I love working here because I can break language barriers while being in an inclusive environment. As a person living with a disability, this is so important to me. The accommodating and welcoming nature of everyone I have interacted with, even during the hiring process when I shared some of the challenges I may face, constantly amazes me. Most importantly, AMN has been open to my feedback to continue improving the accessibility of the tools we use every day.”
AMN Language Services Manager Testimonial
AMN Language Services manager, Karol A., is one of the team members who collaborates with the engineering team to promote inclusive tools for interpreters who are blind. Karol shares her touching AMN journey with us:
“Starting my journey as an interpreter at AMN, the organization's commitment to a diverse, equitable, and inclusive culture was immediately apparent. As a blind individual, I never imagined I would be able to work as a video interpreter. I had initial concerns about my ability to accurately interpret since I would not be able to see what doctors or patients asked me to read or look at. However, these fears were unfounded as AMN embraced my circumstance with openness once they realized I was blind.
Over time, I even earned a promotion to a managerial role at AMN. Despite my initial apprehension about mastering different programs or earning respect as a manager due to my sight impairment, these proved to be non-issues. The engineering team went above and beyond to ensure all programs were accessible, and I was greeted with a high level of respect from my team.
Now, I manage 150 interpreters at AMN, none of whom are blind themselves. Not only have they expressed their inspiration from my story, but many have also started donating their time to causes supporting the blind, such as “Be My Eyes”. When company culture fosters a positive attitude organically, inclusion becomes a seamless integration. At AMN, I have found a level of inclusion and belonging I have never experienced before.”
