December 18, 2013 - Just a few years ago, posting online job notices for nurses, physicians and allied health personnel was considered cutting edge. But the healthcare workforce is increasingly tech-savvy, and online job boards, while still effective, are no longer enough.

Consider how your organization recruits clinical staff. Are you using the most current, forward-thinking recruitment methods? Are you making the most of social media networks and digital marketing?

Healthcare professionals are increasingly using social media for job searching. They’re also using mobile devices frequently, and a growing number are opting to receive mobile job alerts. These trends were reported in AMN Healthcare’s new 2013 Survey of Social Media and Mobile Usage by Healthcare Professionals: Job Search and Career Trends, comparing results to previous surveys in 2010 and 2011.

Let’s look at social media opportunities for recruitment first.

According to the Pew Research Center's Internet and American Life Project, 72 percent of adults who go online use social networking sites. And many of them are using social media for job seeking purposes.

In fact, the 2013 AMN survey found that 41 percent of the healthcare clinicians surveyed are now using social media for job searching--especially pharmacists, nurses and allied health professionals. They’re looking at job postings and researching potential employers. More of them are also embracing LinkedIn, with 58 percent of the respondents now choosing it as their favorite site for job searching.

Does your company have a fully realized LinkedIn profile? If not, it’s time to create one--and constantly update it. You can promote your employer brand, post jobs and receive inquiries or applications.

Now let’s consider the potential afforded by mobile devices. The Pew Research Center reports approximately half of American adults use smartphones, and the statistics are even higher for healthcare professionals, with 3 out of 4 clinicians reporting that they use smartphones in the AMN survey.

Mobile-enhanced websites, mobile job alerts and smartphone apps are three ways employers can take advantage of this phenomenon. AMN’s staffing companies continue to make major investments in these areas to build a better mousetrap, so to speak, for healthcare professionals. Healthcare systems can do the same.

Using mobile job alerts allows potential candidates to receive jobs specifically tailored to their interests and provides an employer with an immediate and direct connection. As the number of candidates using job alerts continues to rise, we expect to see more employers offer this option.

Smartphone apps are another way to attract today’s clinical candidates. For instance, the upgraded MHA iPhone app from Merritt Hawkins allows physician candidates to search for permanent jobs by region and specialty with just a few taps of their finger. AMN’s NurseJobs iPhone app is similar, offering permanent, travel or per diem positions directly to a pool of interested candidates.

The bottom line: technology allows healthcare employers to more easily reach qualified, interested candidates, and as the hunt for clinical talent continues to evolve, they need to position themselves to make the most of these digital opportunities.
